The Delta State Government has announced plans to overhaul and upgrade health centres throughout the state in 2026, emphasizing the essential role of healthcare in the community.
During a briefing at his office in Asaba on Monday, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, the State Commissioner for Health, highlighted the significant progress made by the Ministry of Health in 2025, sharing that of the 441 Primary Health Centres (PHCs) across the three senatorial districts, 150 were upgraded in the past year.
Dr. Onojaeme stated, “We are not resting on our oars; more health centres will be attended to in 2026.”
He attributed these advancements to the commitment of the Governor Sheriff Oborevwori administration to strengthening the health sector, noting that world-class medical equipment has been procured for secondary health facilities.

The Commissioner revealed that this modernization has decreased the cost of critical medical services, including dialysis, from ₦70,000 to ₦45,000 in government hospitals. Furthermore, the State Executive Council has approved the procurement of three Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machines to serve Central Hospital in Warri, Asaba Specialist Hospital, and Delta State University Teaching Hospital in Oghara.
Dr. Onojaeme also addressed manpower shortages in public hospitals, announcing that the government had taken steps to recruit qualified personnel to fill gaps due to retirements, deaths, or voluntary exits. He assured that all ongoing health sector projects would receive adequate attention in 2026, warning contractors to adhere strictly to approved standards.
The Commissioner reported significant improvements in health outcomes, stating that both maternal mortality and under-five mortality rates have declined. He emphasized the administration’s focus extends beyond infrastructure to include the welfare of health workers, with improved remuneration for medical staff.
Dr. Onojaeme encouraged citizens to take advantage of the enhanced healthcare services through routine medical check-ups and healthy lifestyle maintenance, reinforcing the importance of preventative care in combating disease.
