Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has underscored the necessity of fair and transparent tax reforms and responsible media engagement as Nigeria navigates critical economic transitions.
He made the remarks on Thursday while addressing the 2025 Press Week of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, held at Orchid Hotel, Asaba, and was represented by State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu.
Speaking on the theme “Tax Regimes and Exchange Rate Unification: Economic Implications and the Media’s Strategic Role,” Oborevwori described taxation as the backbone of government revenue and essential for national development, emphasizing that taxes must be fair, transparent, and growth‑oriented.
He warned that complex, multiple tax structures and weak enforcement stifle investment and hinder development, and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to broadening the tax base, reducing leakages, and ensuring judicious use of collected funds.
Regarding Nigeria’s recent exchange‑rate unification policy, the governor called it a bold step toward stabilizing the currency, attracting foreign investment, and eliminating market distortions. While noting short‑term inflationary pressures, he said the long‑term benefits—greater investor confidence, a level playing field for businesses, and enhanced export competitiveness—are substantial, especially for Delta’s oil, gas, and agricultural sectors.
Oborevwori urged the media to act as a bridge between policy and the public, educating citizens, monitoring government actions, highlighting resilience, and combating misinformation. “With great influence comes a solemn responsibility,” he said, calling on journalists to maintain accuracy, objectivity, and professionalism. He also assured that the government is cushioning the impact of reforms through targeted social interventions, infrastructure investment, and support for local industries.
Keynote speaker Senator Joel‑Onowakpo Thomas, represented by Mr. Uzuazo Ikelegbe, affirmed that tax reforms and exchange‑rate unification are central to President Bola Tinubu’s broader economic‑stabilization agenda. NUJ Delta State Council Chairman Comrade Churchill Oyowe praised the chosen theme for provoking thoughtful policy dialogue and reiterated gratitude for the governor’s support of press freedom and people‑oriented projects under the MORE agenda.
