In a significant affirmation of the role of traditional institutions in governance, Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, presented 65 brand new Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs) to traditional rulers across the state on Wednesday.
This gesture underscores the importance of these leaders in fostering peace and stability within communities.
During a ceremony held at Government House, Asaba, Governor Oborevwori handed over 60 brand new Toyota Prados and five Land Cruisers, emphasizing that these vehicles serve as “tools of service” for the royal fathers to facilitate their movement and enhance their efficiency.
“This day is a very important and symbolic day in the life of this administration,” Oborevwori stated, recognizing the beneficiaries as a “special class of leaders” whose contributions are pivotal yet often understated. The Governor highlighted the critical role traditional rulers play as intermediaries between the government and grassroots communities, stating, “They are vital in mobilizing communities, promoting government programmes, and supporting security agencies.”
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to an inclusive economy based on equity and justice, praising the monarchs for their unwavering dedication to maintaining peace and progress. “I can confidently state that traditional rulers have made governance easier and more effective in Delta State,” he remarked.
The decision to provide rugged SUVs was intentional, considering the challenging terrains that many traditional rulers navigate. “These vehicles are not luxuries; they are tools of service,” the Governor explained, linking the gesture to his MORE Agenda, particularly the pillar of Opportunities for All.
Oborevwori also highlighted various social intervention programmes implemented by his government, including financial support for vulnerable persons and empowerment initiatives for women and youths.
He emphasized that the assistance to traditional rulers was based on fairness and a recognition of their invaluable contributions.
In his remarks, Deputy Governor Sir Monday Onyeme described the vehicle presentation as a testament to the Oborevwori administration’s respect for traditional institutions, while Secretary to the State Government Dr. Kingsley Emu outlined the government’s commitment to empathy and collective welfare in its governance approach.
Traditional leaders, including the Obi of Owa, HRM Dr. Emmanuel Efeizomor, and the Orodje of Okpe Kingdom, HRM Major General Felix Mujakperuo (Rtd.), expressed their deep gratitude to the Governor, stating that the vehicles would greatly enhance their effectiveness in their traditional responsibilities.
Mujakperuo emphasized that mobility is essential for traditional rulers, calling the vehicle a “symbol of authority and service” that strengthens grassroots governance and peace-building across the state.
The presentation of the SUVs solidifies the partnership between the Delta State government and its traditional institutions, aiming to foster collaboration for community development and stability.
