UGHELLI, DELTA STATE- Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, on Monday inaugurated the groundbreaking ceremony for the ₦39.3 billion Otovwodo Flyover project, aimed at resolving long-standing traffic issues at one of the state’s busiest junctions.
During the ceremony in Ughelli, the governor emphasized that the flyover represents a pivotal step in his administration’s commitment to infrastructure development, targeting prudent resource management and the enhancement of both urban and rural connectivity for inclusive economic growth.
Governor Oborevwori acknowledged the rapid population
increase in Ughelli, a historical center for commerce and education, which has intensified pressure on the local road network, particularly at the notorious Otovwodo Junction on the East–West Road. He noted the severe traffic gridlock at the junction, which has cost commuters significant time and productivity.
To provide temporary relief, his administration has previously constructed alternative routes, including Uduere Street and Royal Avenue, at a cost close to ₦6 billion, to ease congestion while the flyover is under construction.
The governor revealed that the flyover, awarded to Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, is scheduled for completion within 12 months, with a firm deadline due to the junction’s critical significance. The project encompasses a multi-span reinforced concrete bridge with dual carriageways, roundabouts, and related roadworks, designed to facilitate traffic flow, enhance safety, and promote economic activity.
Oborevwori also pointed out the project’s employment potential, estimating that it will create thousands of direct and indirect jobs throughout the construction process. He urged the community to remain patient and follow traffic directives during the construction phase.
Reiterating his dedication to transparency, the governor assured that his administration would continue to implement major projects without incurring debt, alongside several completed projects set for commissioning under the Renewed Hope for MORE Agenda in 2026.
Engr. Peer Lubasch, Managing Director of Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, expressed gratitude to the state government for entrusting the contract to the company, affirming the project will feature a dual carriageway, advanced drainage systems, and solar street lighting, with a commitment to uphold global standards in project delivery.
After the ceremony, Governor Oborevwori met with the Ovie of Ughelli Kingdom, HRM Wilson Ojakovo Oharisi III, and Chief Morrison Olori, reiterating his commitment to serving all Deltans.
The event was attended by key dignitaries, including Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, local government officials, traditional leaders, and community members, who praised the initiative as a transformative solution to Ughelli’s traffic woes.
