President Bola Tinubu has appointed Tunji Disu as the acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP) following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun.
The announcement was made on Tuesday by Bayo Onanuga, the special adviser on information and strategy.
Egbetokun resigned from his position citing “pressing family considerations.
” In his statement, Onanuga highlighted the president’s confidence in Disu’s operational experience, leadership capabilities, and ability to provide strategic direction for the Nigeria Police Force during this critical time.
President Tinubu plans to convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment. His nomination will subsequently be sent to the Senate for confirmation, in accordance with the Police Act 2020.
“The President reiterates his administration’s steadfast commitment to enhancing national security, strengthening institutional capacity, and ensuring the Nigeria Police Force remains professional and accountable in fulfilling its constitutional duties,” the statement added.
Kayode Egbetokun was appointed as IGP in June 2023, succeeding Usman Baba, and was confirmed by the police council in October of the same year. Egbetokun would have served a full four-year tenure until June 2027 under the provisions of the amended police act.
