Delta State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa has said the media must be independent and protected to enable it play its role effectively in strengthening Democracy and promoting good governance in Nigeria
The State Governor was speaking at the inauguration of the Delta State Council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists,NUJ Secretariat, in Asaba Delta State.
Governor Okowa said the Journalists can and should perform their duties without bias at all times.
He commended the Press for objective reportage of Delta State Government activities and sued for sustained partnership.
Governor Okowa said his administration had done well in transforming the state despite criticisms from the opposition pointing out that leaders and those speaking ills about his administration should be factual and stop distorting facts.
He said in the last seven and half years, his administration has done well in the provision of infrastructure and human capital development in Asaba and other parts of the state.
The National President of the NUJ, Comrade Chris Isiguzo lauded Governor Okowa for encouraging press freedom by improving the working condition of journalists in the state.
He added that Government officials were expected to be honest, responsible, transparent, accountable, efficient in administration and services delivery.
The Chairman of the State Council of NUJ, Comrade Michael Ikeogwu commended Governor Okowa for breaking the 31 years old jinx by completing and inaugurating the Press centre since the state was created.
The Commissioner for Housing Chief Festus Ochonogor said the project was a deliberate effort of Government to provide a befitting place for journalists to perform their duties and advised the union’s leadership to protect it.
