EFFURUN – Tragedy struck on Wednesday at the Refinery Junction along the Effurun-Sapele Road in Uvwie Local Government Area, Delta State, when a fully loaded petrol tanker crashed into a commercial tricycle, leaving one person dead and another fighting for their life.
The accident occurred when the tanker, descending the Effurun Roundabout bridge, reportedly suffered a brake failure.
The driver lost control of the heavy-duty vehicle, ramming into a tricycle (Keke Napep) carrying passengers.
One victim died instantly at the scene, while a second passenger sustained severe injuries and was rushed for medical attention.
The crash caused immediate panic as fuel began leaking from the tanker.
Despite the looming danger of an explosion, some bystanders attempted to scoop the spilled product.
However, a major disaster was averted through the swift intervention of the Executive Chairman of Uvwie LGA, Chief Anthony Onoriode Ofoni who arrived at the scene shortly after the incident, alerted the fire service and security agencies.
Personnel from the fire department, the Nigeria Police, and the Nigerian Navy quickly cordoned off the area to prevent a fire outbreak and manage the crowd.
Expressing his condolences to the victims’ families, Chief Ofoni described the event as “unfortunate” and issued a stern warning to residents regarding the dangers of approaching fallen tankers.
“The highly flammable nature of fuel makes scooping activities extremely dangerous,” the Chairman cautioned, urging the public to prioritize safety over temporary gain.
The Chairman was joined at the scene by several officials, including Vice Chairman Hon. Andrew Agagbo, Uvwie Taskforce Chairman on Environment Hon. Collins Ighrakpata, and other community leaders. Authorities have since secured the junction to ensure public safety and oversee the evacuation of the wreckage
