In a commendable effort to prevent the spread of polio, the Rotary Club of Ogunu has immunized over 50 children under the age of five against the polio virus.
During the immunization held at the Ugbuwangue market,the Rotary club of Ogunu empowered 23 Traders with umbrellas to cover their wares .
Rotary International for decades, has been at the heart of the global fight against poliovirus.
Rotary International has continued to advocate for vaccination efforts, especially in areas where polio remains endemic, such as Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Speaking during the event , President of Rotary Club of Ogunu, Rotarian Osamuyi Omokha encouraged the Traders and parents at Ugbuwangue and Okere markets as well as London opi street to take advantage of the exercise and get their children Immunized against the dreaded disease.

Rotarian Omokha also advised the traders that benefitted from the club’s umbrella donation to take good care of it so that the club would be challenged to assist others whose umbrellas are damaged .
He added that the programme was in line with two out of Rotary’s seven areas of focus which are economic and community development and child and maternal care .

Also speaking the project chairman,Rotarian Anthony Eleh disclosed that the 23 Beneficiaries were carefully selected after the project committee visited the markets on a need assessment tour.
The beneficiaries at Ugbuwangue and Okere markets were full of joy and thanked Rotary Club of Ogunu for the gesture .

Also at London Opi street and environs the traders who received the Rotary club of Ogunu branded umbrella said due to the harsh economy,they were unable to change their turned umbrellas and prayed God to bless members of the club for the gesture .

The event had earlier featured Polio vaccine talk by the vice President Rotarian Onome Eboe-Ogoro.

Others who spoke on the importance of polio vaccine include Queen Obejor , Past Assistant District Governor Rotarian Felix Adeoye, Assistant District Governor zone 9 Rotarian Osaro Igbinaduwa , Rotarian Daniel Oji amongst others enlightened the attendees on the disease and the preventive effects of the vaccines.

They encouraged parents and guidance to take action and protect their children by getting them vaccinated.
This initiative is part of the club’s preparations for World Polio Day, observed annually on October 24.
