In an unforgettable evening filled with high drama and electrifying football, the State League team emerged victorious in the 2025 Ogunu Chairman’s Cup, defeating their fierce rivals, the Catholic Boys, 15–14 on penalties after a tense goalless draw at full time.
The grand finale also featured an exciting dress rehearsal match between the Eghweya’s and the Emete’s, which ended in a narrow 1–0 victory for the Eghweya team.
Played before a massive crowd of jubilant supporters at the Ogunu Township field, the final lived up to its expectations as both teams showcased grit, skill, and tactical discipline throughout the match.
For ninety minutes, they fought tirelessly, but resilient defending and outstanding goalkeeping kept the scoreline level.
With no winner after regulation time, the match proceeded to a nerve-racking penalty shootout that tested the composure of both sides.
In a remarkable marathon of spot kicks, the State League triumphed 15–14, igniting wild celebrations among players and supporters as they lifted the coveted Ogunu Chairman’s Cup trophy.
The event featured a formal trophy presentation to the victorious State League team, amid cheers and the awarding of medals to the Chairman of the Ogunu community, Sir Newton Ayiwe, as well as musical performances.
Community leaders, including Sir Newton Ayiwe and Chief Vincent Okudolor, praised the peaceful conduct of the competition, noting that the Chairman’s Cup has fostered unity, youth empowerment, and sports development in Ogunu. They also promised an even bigger and more competitive tournament in future editions.
