The Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the highly anticipated Ofugara Peace and Unity Cup has officially announced the commencement of registration for its 2025 tournament.
The event, which has become a cornerstone of the local sporting calendar, is set to bring together former football stars in a celebration of sport and community spirit.
The third edition of this prestigious veterans’ tournament is exclusively for ex-players aged 43 and above, offering a platform for past heroes to relive their glory days on the pitch. The competition is scheduled to kick off on October 1st, 2025.
In a significant coup for the event’s profile, the committee has unveiled two former Super Eagles internationals, Richard Eromoigbe and Azubuike Egwueke, as the official ambassadors for this year’s cup. Their involvement is expected to draw significant attention and inspire participants and fans alike.
However, with prestige comes high demand. The LOC has confirmed that registration, which opened on September 1st, will be strictly limited. Only the first twenty (20) teams to complete their registration will be granted a place in the competitive lineup. The registration window is set to close promptly at midnight on Thursday, September 12th, 2025.
The draw ceremony, where the fixtures for the tournament will be determined, has been scheduled for September 20th, 2025.
The detailed planning behind the event was revealed during a recent LOC meeting held at the Okwisoko Town Hall. LOC Chairman, Mr. Davison Efetoboh, outlined the comprehensive structure put in place to ensure the event’s success and safety.
“We are leaving nothing to chance,” Mr. Efetoboh stated. “We have established dedicated sub-committees for security, logistics, medical services, officiating, media, and rules compliance. Our goal is to deliver a professionally run tournament that not only showcases exciting football but also guarantees the welfare of all participants and spectators.”
Organizers emphasize that the tournament’s mission extends beyond the final scoreline. The Ofugara Cup aims to rekindle grassroots passion for football and promote lasting harmony across communities, embodying its motto that “legends don’t retire, they inspire.”
Interested teams of eligible ex-footballers are urged to act swiftly to avoid disappointment. For registration details and forms, teams should contact the LOC secretariat.
