The Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ, Delta Broadcasting Service, DBS, Warri Chapel, on Tuesday June 23, 2026, held a one-day capacity training on effective coverage of the 2027 General Elections, with a call on journalists to uphold the ethics and standards of the profession at all times.
The training, which took place at the Governor’s Office Annex in Warri, drew journalists from within and outside the city.
Declaring the event open, the General Manager of DBS Warri, Pastor Malcolm Oteri, described the training as timely, noting that it would equip reporters with the requisite skills to navigate and cover the 2027 general elections effectively. He commended the Chapel Executive for the initiative and urged journalists to apply the knowledge gained to combat misinformation and fake news, particularly those circulated on social media during election periods.

Chairman of the NUJ DBS Warri Chapel, Comrade John Glover, said the programme was designed to equip journalists with a better understanding of the Electoral Act and enhance their capacity for effective reportage during the 2027 polls. He commended sponsors of the training and expressed confidence in the resource persons to adequately address the topics presented.
Delivering the keynote address, Mr. Matthew Tonlagha, Chief Executive Officer and Founder of Maton Engineering Nigeria Limited, lauded the Chapel for organizing the training for media practitioners in Warri. Tonlagha, who was represented by Mr. Martins Avuara, said Maton Engineering, a major player in the surveillance of crude oil and gas assets, has also contributed immensely to societal growth.

Resource persons, Dr. Godwin Orhedawhe and Mr. Linus Chima, in separate lectures, dwelt on journalistic ethics, professional conduct, appropriate dress codes, and the need to strengthen professional journalism for credible election coverage.

In goodwill messages, management staff of DBS Warri, including Head of Administration, Mr. Wilson Onose, and Head of News and Current Affairs, Mrs. Eucheria Akarue, commended the NUJ Executive for the timely and impactful programme.
The training also featured interactive question-and-answer sessions, giving participants the opportunity to seek clarification on issues relating to election reporting and professional journalism.
