The Executive Chairman of Aniocha South Local Government Area, Hon. Pastor Jude Chukwunwike , has urged Nigerians to renew their faith in democratic institutions and remain committed to the ideals of unity, participation, accountability, and nation-building as the country marks Democracy Day.
In a statement issued by his spokesman, Oyem Jonathan, to commemorate June 12, Chukwunwike paid glowing tribute to the heroes and martyrs of Nigeria’s democratic struggle whose sacrifices laid the foundation for the freedoms and civil liberties enjoyed by citizens today.
He described June 12 as a defining moment in Nigeria’s political history and a symbol of the collective determination of Nigerians to uphold the principles of representative governance, justice, and the rule of law.
According to him, the significance of Democracy Day extends beyond annual celebrations, serving as an opportunity for reflection on the nation’s democratic journey, the progress recorded, and the responsibilities required to deepen democratic culture and strengthen public institutions.
“June 12 reminds us that democracy was neither gifted nor accidental. It was earned through sacrifice, courage, resilience, and the unwavering commitment of patriotic Nigerians who believed that the will of the people must remain supreme,” Chukwunwike stated.
The council chairman commended Nigerians for their steadfast belief in democracy despite the prevailing economic, social, and security challenges confronting the nation. He noted that the endurance of democratic governance over the years demonstrates the maturity of the Nigerian people and their collective aspiration for a more prosperous and equitable society.
While acknowledging that no democratic system is without imperfections, Chukwunwike maintained that democracy remains the most credible framework for promoting accountability, protecting fundamental rights, and ensuring that citizens participate in determining the direction of governance.
“Our democracy may still be evolving, but it remains the most reliable platform through which the people can freely choose their leaders, express their aspirations, and contribute to national development. The task before us is not to abandon democracy because of its challenges but to strengthen it through active citizenship, responsible leadership, and institutional reforms,” he said.
Paying special tribute to the heroes of democracy, both living and departed, he said their sacrifices continue to inspire generations of Nigerians to defend democratic ideals and uphold constitutional governance.
“We owe a profound debt of gratitude to the men and women who stood firm during difficult periods in our history and paid enormous personal sacrifices to secure democratic freedoms for future generations. Their courage remains a guiding light for our nation and a reminder that democracy must never be taken for granted,” he added.
Chukwunwike also acknowledged the efforts of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, stating that the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda is focused on implementing reforms aimed at repositioning the nation for long-term growth and stability. He urged Nigerians to support constructive policies while engaging government through lawful and democratic channels.
The Aniocha South chairman further commended the Delta State Governor, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Elder Sheriff Francis Oborevwori, JP, for the implementation of the MORE Agenda, which he noted has translated into visible development projects and people-centred interventions across communities in the state.
He equally praised local government chairmen across Delta State for sustaining grassroots governance through impactful initiatives that continue to strengthen democratic participation and community development.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to inclusive governance and service delivery, Chukwunwike stated that the proposed 2026 Budget of Renewed Hope and Consolidation would further prioritize peace building, security, healthcare, education, infrastructure, economic empowerment, social welfare, and other critical sectors that directly impact the lives of residents.
He stressed that leadership must remain rooted in responsibility, integrity, empathy, and accountability to the people.
“Public office is a sacred trust. Leadership is not merely about authority; it is about service, sacrifice, and the responsibility to improve the lives of the people. This remains the covenant of our administration with the people of Aniocha South,” he said.
As Nigerians commemorate this year’s Democracy Day, Chukwunwike called for greater national cohesion, urging citizens to rise above ethnic, religious, and political differences in pursuit of a common vision of progress and national development.
He emphasized that Nigeria’s diversity should be regarded as a strategic strength rather than a source of division, noting that sustainable development can only thrive in an atmosphere of unity, mutual respect, and collective responsibility.
“Let us honour the memory of our democratic heroes by preserving the values they fought for and by working together to build a nation founded on justice, inclusion, opportunity, and shared prosperity. Democracy remains our collective responsibility, and its future depends on the commitment of every citizen,” he stated.
The council chairman wished Nigerians a peaceful and reflective Democracy Day, urging citizens to recommit themselves to the principles of democratic governance and continue playing their role as custodians of the nation’s democratic heritage.
