The Executive Chairman of Bomadi Local Government Council, Hon. Dagidi Rawlings Andaye, has visited the scene of a fire outbreak at Bomadi Overside and assured victims of government support after the inferno claimed one life and destroyed property worth millions of naira.

The fire, which broke out in the early hours of Saturday, August 1, 2026, at about 4:04 a.m., razed several wooden structures and displaced many residents.

An eyewitness, Mr. Samuel Osifo, said one person, identified as Mr. J.T. Christopher, was feared trapped and later confirmed dead. The actual cause of the fire is yet to be determined as security agencies have commenced preliminary investigations.

During an on-the-spot assessment on Saturday, Hon. Andaye interacted with victims and residents, expressing sympathy over the losses.

“I deeply sympathize with every family affected by this unfortunate incident. It is indeed painful to witness the destruction of homes, livelihoods, and the tragic loss of a precious life,” the Chairman said.

“On behalf of the Bomadi Local Government Council, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Mr. J.T. Christopher. We stand with every victim during this difficult time.”

He assured that the Council would provide support “within the limits of its capacity” to cushion the effects of the disaster.

*Call For Safer Building Practices*
Andaye used the visit to discourage the construction of wooden habitations, noting that such structures are highly vulnerable to fire and aid the rapid spread of infernos.

“I also appeal to our people to prioritize safer building methods, as preventing future occurrences remains a collective responsibility,” he said. “We are confident that the ongoing investigation will reveal the cause of the fire, and appropriate measures will be taken thereafter.”

Officials of the Nigeria Police Force, led by the Divisional Police Officer, Bomadi Division, alongside members of the Bomadi Vigilante and other security agencies, were at the scene to assess the damage and document the incident. Authorities said a comprehensive investigation would be carried out to establish the cause.

The Council urged residents to remain calm, cooperate with security agencies, and observe safety measures to protect lives and property.
