The Executive Chairman of Aniocha South Local Government Council, Hon Pastor Jude Chukwunwike , has issued a firm appeal to revenue collectors and all relevant stakeholders to strictly adhere to established standards, code of conduct, and operate within the ambit of the law in the discharge of their duties.
Speaking through his spokesman, Oyem Jonathan, the Chairman expressed concern over reported cases of multiple taxation in Afor Market, describing the practice as harmful to economic growth and detrimental to the wellbeing of traders. He emphasized that all revenues must be paid only to duly authorized officers assigned to collect such levies across markets in Aniocha South.
Chukwunwike noted that multiple taxation places unnecessary financial burden on traders, stifles business expansion, and creates an unfriendly commercial environment.
He said the local government has approved official revenue tickets which must be issued as proof of any legitimate payment. He further stressed that it is neither the policy nor the practice of the Executive Chairman or legitimately appointed ad hoc revenue collectors to engage in multiple taxation, distancing the council from such illegal activities.
He called on traders and market stakeholders to remain vigilant and support the government by exposing individuals engaged in unlawful revenue collection.
Hon. Pastor Jude Chukwunwike has, from inception, maintained a zero tolerance on touting, multiple taxation, and all forms of hooliganism.
“The government will not condone any act of illegality. Anyone found engaging in such unwholesome practices will be held accountable,” Jonathan warned.
While reaffirming the council’s commitment to creating a conducive environment for businesses to thrive, he encouraged traders to go about their lawful activities without fear of harassment. He also urged them to uphold environmental standards by maintaining cleanliness and hygiene within the market, stressing that a safe and healthy trading environment is a shared responsibility.
The council reassures the public of its continued efforts to sanitize the revenue system, protect traders, and promote sustainable economic activities across Aniocha South.
