The Delta State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed allegations by former Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, linking Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to an alleged assassination plot, describing the claims as “reckless, unfounded and politically motivated.”
The rebuttal comes hours after Omo-Agege, who is also the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Senatorial Candidate for Delta Central, alleged that armed men stormed the venue of an NDC campaign meeting in Uvwie, Delta Central, on Thursday morning.
Reacting in a statement signed by State Publicity Secretary, Valentine Onojeghuo, the Delta APC rejected any insinuation linking Oborevwori or the party to the alleged threats.
The party described Omo-Age’s claims as a “campaign of calumny” and an attempt to attract public sympathy ahead of the forthcoming elections.
“It is unfortunate that Sen. Omo-Agege has chosen unfounded allegations and personal attacks over issues, policies and ideas. As a former senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Sen. Omo-Agege knows the gravity of such allegations,” the statement said.
The APC said it was “unthinkable” for the governor, as Chief Security Officer of the state, to be associated with threats against any citizen, stressing that Oborevwori is committed to protecting the lives and property of all Deltans.
The party challenged Omo-Age to present any credible evidence to security agencies for investigation rather than making public statements “capable of damaging the reputation of the governor.”
Delta APC further alleged that Omo-Age and the NDC lacked credible campaign issues to challenge the Oborevwori administration, claiming their attacks were a response to the government’s “unprecedented infrastructural development” in the last three years.
The party urged the former senator to abandon what it called a “needless smear campaign” and focus on his opponent in the Delta Central race, Senator Ede Dafinone.
“For the records, Governor Oborevwori is not on the Delta Central Senatorial ballot with Senator Omo-Age,” the party stated.
It reaffirmed its commitment to defending the integrity of the governor and the APC against what it described as attempts to mislead the public and tarnish the governor’s image for political advantage.
