The lawmaker representing Uvwie State Constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly,Hon. Edafe Emakpor, has strongly condemned the alleged extra-judicial killing of a young man, Mr. Mene Ogidi, by a police officer in Effurun.
Hon Emakpor said the incident which occurred on April 26, 2026 has sparked significant concern regarding professional standards within the police force.
Hon Emakpor described the shooting as a clear violation of rules of engagement and an affront to human rights.
The lawmaker commended the Delta State Police Command for the swift arrest and transfer of the officer involved to Force Headquarters.
He insisted on a diligent and transparent investigation to ensure all culpable parties face the law.
Hon Emakpor urged the Nigeria Police Force to intensify training on Standard Operating Procedures for armed officers.
The lawmaker also called for Stricter measures for handling waybill parcels, adding that Proactive steps to prevent the transport of illicit items must be put in place.
He further added that Proper declaration, verification, and documentation of items intended for waybill should be insisted upon at all times,stating that this proactive approach will help to deter the movement of illicit items and reduce the likelihood of situations that could escalate into avoidable tragedies.
Hon. Emakpor extended his condolences to the Ogidi family and urged the residents of Uvwie to remain peaceful while the authorities conclude their investigation.
“The sanctity of human life must never be undermined,” he stated, promising that the pursuit of justice for the deceased remains a top priority.
