As Nigeria joins the global community to commemorate International Workers’ Day, the Executive Chairman of Aniocha South Local Government Area, Hon. Pastor Jude Chukwunwike , has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to promoting decent work, fair wages, and improved welfare for all categories of workers in the council.
In a goodwill message issued by his Spokesman, Oyem Jonathan, the Chairman aligned the significance of May Day with the core principles of the International Labour Organization (ILO), emphasizing dignity in labour, social protection, workplace safety, and inclusive economic growth.
He described workers as the engine room of governance and development, noting that sustainable progress can only be achieved when the rights, welfare, and productivity of the workforce are deliberately prioritized.
“Workers’ Day is more than a ceremonial observance. It is a global call to uphold the dignity of labour, promote fair working conditions, and recognize the indispensable contributions of workers to nation building,” he stated.
Hon. Chukwunwike commended the resilience and dedication of civil servants, teachers, healthcare professionals, artisans, traders, farmers, and entrepreneurs across Aniocha South, acknowledging their role in sustaining public service delivery and local economic stability despite prevailing national challenges.
Addressing workers’ welfare, the Chairman highlighted key policy actions undertaken by his administration in line with acceptable labour standards. These include the prompt and consistent payment of salaries, implementation of the new minimum wage as approved by relevant authorities, and the provision of festive support packages during Christmas and other major celebrations to cushion economic pressures on workers and their families.
He further outlined ongoing efforts to strengthen institutional capacity and improve working conditions, including regular staff training and development programmes, digitization of administrative processes through the provision of computers and office equipment, and the deployment of solar-powered systems to ensure operational efficiency amid power supply challenges.
As part of deliberate efforts to promote excellence and boost morale within the workforce, the Chairman also instituted an award scheme to recognize and honour best performing staff across departments. He described the initiative as a strategic motivational tool aimed at rewarding diligence, encouraging healthy competition, and fostering a culture of professionalism and service delivery in the local government system.
According to him, these interventions are designed not only to enhance productivity but also to create a work environment that reflects fairness, dignity, and motivation principles that are central to ILO standards.
“While we acknowledge existing challenges such as economic fluctuations and infrastructural gaps, our administration remains unwavering in its resolve to build a system where workers are valued, protected, and empowered to perform at their best,” he assured.
The Chairman also reiterated his commitment to transparency, equity, and continuous engagement with workers’ representatives and relevant government agencies to deepen labour relations and ensure that policies reflect the real needs of the workforce.
He called on workers to uphold professionalism, discipline, and integrity, stressing that improved welfare must be matched with increased dedication to duty and service excellence.
Hon. Chukwunwike paid tribute to retirees and the families of deceased workers, recognizing their lifelong contributions to public service and assuring them of the government’s respect and continued support.
He also encouraged young people within the local government to invest in skills acquisition, education, and entrepreneurship, noting that the future of work is evolving and requires adaptability and innovation.
“Let this May Day renew our collective commitment to building a fair, inclusive, and productive society where no worker is left behind. Together, we will continue to advance Aniocha South toward greater prosperity,” he said.
The 2026 Workers’ Day celebration serves as a timely reminder that the strength of any government lies in the wellbeing of its workforce, and that policies rooted in fairness, inclusion, and respect for labour will always yield lasting development.
