The Delta State Government has said it will not engage Senator Ovie Omo-Agege in what it described as a “campaign of calumny,” stressing that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori will seek re-election in 2027 based on performance and delivery of promises.
The position was made known on Thursday at a press conference in Asaba by the Commissioner for Works, Rural Roads, and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu.
Aniagwu was reacting to allegations by Omo-Agege, the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Senatorial Candidate for Delta Central, who recently claimed there was an attempt on his life in Uvwie.
The Commissioner said the Governor would rather convince Deltans for a second term based on how he has fulfilled the promises made in 2023.
“Instead of speaking on what they intend to do when they get in, they have resorted to painting pictures that are completely at variance with the reality. However, we are not going to lose sight of the deliverables very well captured in the MORE Agenda,” Aniagwu stated.
“Governor Oborevwori will focus on delivering on his promises with good governance, making life much more comfortable for our people rather than joining anybody in the mud.”
He said the government’s response became necessary to protect “vulnerable minds from falling prey to the narratives spun by the opposition.”
Aniagwu described Omo-Agege’s allegations as a manifestation of an earlier predicted plan to deceive voters in Delta Central ahead of 2027.
“A few days ago, a senatorial candidate of the NDC in Delta Central opened up his campaign in Uvwie and instead of campaigning on the things he intends to do, he resorted to raising issues that have no bearing with the governor, accusing Oborevwori of planning to eliminate him,” he said.
“In the first place, Oborevwori is not contesting for a senate position; he is contesting re-election as the Governor of Delta State.
Therefore, they are not on the same ballot. Omo-Agege is not a competitor with Oborevwori in this election.”
The Commissioner expressed confidence that Deltans would vote based on development recorded in the last three years.
“As the campaign progresses, we will be relying on this confidence that we have, both on the part of our people and across the international community. This is because we know that Deltans appreciate what is good,” he said.
“Deltans have seen the development that has greeted our state in the last three years, and I am very convinced that, being persons who look out for what is good, will definitely be looking in the direction of Governor Oborevwori as they approach the ballot box in 2027.”
Aniagwu also accused Omo-Agege of polarizing the All Progressives Congress, APC, during his membership, adding that Governor Oborevwori has “mended broken fences and calmed frayed nerves to make the party more united and even more acceptable to Deltans.”
